As part of an international celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, ten schools from the Aquinas Trust gathered to participate in a Celebration of Religious Education on 11th July 2017.

For the seventh year running, Bishop Justus Church of England School hosted the annual event started as part of the Religious Education Council’s Celebrating RE initiative. This year’s celebration adds an international dimension with more than 600 other schools worldwide joining the celebration through schools500reformation/GPENreformation.

As part of a full-day of activities, Year 4 pupils are reflecting upon their school’s theses about the changes they would like to see in Church and/or the world. Pupils did drama workshops exploring their theses and how they can bring about the change they want to see in the world. The day had fun activities where each school shared their thesis with pupils from other schools. School made presentations and movies about their thesis. The concluding service included a symbolic reenactment of Martin Luther’s nailing of his thesis, whereby student’s nailed their school’s thesis to our replica door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg.

Commenting on the event, Assistant Head and Project Leader, Patrick Boughton-Reynolds said, “The main point of this event is for our pupils to reflect on the need for us to be a ‘voice’ in the world, if need be a ‘voice of dissent’, like Luther. It is also hoped that our children will not only speak out but also be part of the change that they want to see in their communities and the wider world.
