The Institut Majengo is a secondary school with 1,260 students in Goma, DR Congo – a country whose socio-political situation is still unstable due to its conflict-laden history. Especially in Goma, economic problems and the spread of the EBOLA virus dominate the lives of the population. This makes it even more important to provide a good education for the young generation, to whom the Institut Majengo is dedicated in two departments: the scientific departments with the mathematics and physics branches and the technical departments with the trade and construction branches.
The technical faculty has been in existence since 2015 – and has led to a high demand among students. Many of them dream of becoming engineers. However, this presents the Institut Majengo with new challenges, as the number and equipment of the classrooms are insufficient for the simultaneous operation of both departments. Six new classrooms are needed; 16 of the existing classrooms are obsolete and in need of renovation; and two new computer rooms and three laboratories are needed to serve both the scientific and technical branches. Since there is no budget to tackle these new construction and conversion measures “at one go”, the Institut Majengo has drawn up a plan to build or renovate two rooms per year. In this way the school could have a modern and pedagogically meaningful infrastructure in 10 years.
The project is to start at the beginning of 2020, so that by July 2020 two classrooms for 50 students each will be completed and equipped with chairs, tables, shelves and blackboards.
Would you like to support the Institut Majengo with your school and enable 100 students to study in an environment that encourages learning?
