For a very long time now, the people of the Volta Region have been agitating for a university to be established in the region. Therefore when the door was opened by the government of Ghana to private organisations and individuals to establish universities, it became a challenge to the E.P. Church. At its 58th Synod held at Achimota School in Accra in the year 1999, the E.P. Church resolved to take the bold step of establishing a university in the Volta Region.
Since its inception some 160 years ago in Ghana, the E.P. Church has concerned herself with the provision of social services for the people. The church has therefore been engaged in areas such as establishing of schools at the basic and secondary levels, building of health facilities, establishing agricultural institutions to provide food to feed the population, and providing hospitality facilities. These projects have been undertaken to practicalise the mission statement of the church aimed at “Bringing light to where there is darkness”.
The official name for the institution is EVANGELICAL PRESBYTERIAN UNIVERSITY COLLEGE (EPUC). It is dubbed The Premier University of the Volta Region. Even though the institution has been spearheaded by the E.P. Church, it is intended to bring university education to the doorstep of the people of the Volta Region and Ghana as a whole.
To be a Centre of Excellence in Advanced Education
The Evangelical Presbyterian University College (EPUC) is a Christian private tertiary Institution, committed to teaching, advancement of knowledge, research and community service for the development of human potential in Ghana, Africa and the wider world.
OUR CORE VALUES
Truth, Honesty, Justice, Hard work, Discipline and Togetherness
The motto of the University is: “Knowledge is Light”.
The University is envisaged to develop into an institution with its own identity. To this end the EPUC shall be an IT-based institution. It shall also be an open university that will reach out to those who are mature and talented but excluded from access to university education.
The EPUC shall be a Centre of Research, Creativity and Excellence. There shall be an Innovation Centre established in the university to provide facilities for students and faculty to engage in research, demonstration and creativity in fields of academic, professional and economic interest such as the following: wood work unit, aqua culture field laboratory, animal breeding research unit, etc.
The purpose of teaching and learning at EPUC shall be to enable students
– apply knowledge (not just to recall facts);
– discover new ways of thinking, new ways of doing things and new ways of adapting to change in the community and the world; and
– learn how to solve problems when they confront them.
