Lutheran Academy in Martin, Slovakia, started its existence in 2003 with only 19 first graders. After this slow start in post-communist Slovakia, in a town previously known for its war-machinery factory and strict opposition to Christianity, the school today serves over 550 students in preschool and kindergarten, elementary and middle school, and bilingual (English-Slovak) high school. Besides its foreign language focus the Lutheran Academy Martin is targeted on practical religious education, with weekly student worship services, student choir and school worship band. In addition the school emphasizes social aspect of evangelical Christianity and the students are engaged in supporting a number of social partners (homeless shelter, elderly house, neglected women and children, schools in Serbia, etc.)
